On 1 October 2025, HITRIplus held its 20th global scientific seminar, organised within the framework of Work Package 2 – Networking, Communication and Dissemination. The online event brought together participants from research institutes and clinical centres to explore the latest developments in the use of radioactive ion beams (RIBs) for image-guided particle therapy.
The seminar, moderated by Angelica Facoetti (CNAO Foundation) and Manjit Dosanjh (University of Oxford), featured a talk by Dr Daria Boscolo, Staff Physicist in the Biophysics Department at GSI Darmstadt and Deputy Group Leader in the Particle Therapy Physics Group.
Dr Boscolo presented recent work carried out within the BARB – Biomedical Applications of Radioactive Ion Beams initiative at GSI. Her presentation, “Radioactive Beams for Image-Guided Particle Therapy and Biomedical Applications,” provided an overview of how RIBs, thanks to their β⁺-decay properties, enable real-time monitoring of the beam range via PET imaging, helping to reduce uncertainties in charged-particle therapy.
She discussed the latest preclinical results, including the first treatment of a mouse tumour using radioactive ion beams, marking a promising step towards future clinical applications. The seminar concluded with an engaging Q&A session, underlining the growing interest in the potential of RIBs to enhance the precision and safety of particle therapy.
